Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Opportunity Knocks in Thailand? I'd tell them to get lost..:

I'm pretty sure that's an old scam they had here in Phuket before. A couple of guys go around collecting for some fund that doesn't exist. Pretty good scam considering most people would give some money as to avoid any problem with the police/army.

Yes they seemed to have a collection of plays, thinking about it - a bit of intimidation with the police / army thing, a play on status with the 'this guy has already given us money' thing, plus they were in the door before I could blink... All I would say is, if people knock on your door, try not to let them in, and failing that, don't be afraid to tell them to 'do one' :)

5,000...8,000 Baht??? Luckily I have hotel security :) I've only ever been approached while eating in a Thai style cafe. However, they were a couple of women with I.D cards, official looking receipt books and a folder of photos of disabled kids. I also noted if the locals were donating money, which they were, so I did also...but not a small fortune.

I know it's a bit crazy Snap, definitely one targetted at the Expat brigade ... and I think you're right, general rule of thumb, copy the locals! (in most cases, not all ;)

Tell them: "Really? For the army? I know Colonel Phon (or somethinng similiar)from the 1st Division. Do you know him? He's in town at the moment, sure he'd be delighted to come and congratulate you on the fine work you're doing." Watch them make excuses and leave (well, unless they call your bluff, that might get tricky) Course, if you really do know a Thai soldier I'm sure he'd delighted to come round with his mates and "congratulate" them in a forthright manner.

hehe yes Gippo, there is a large army base in Pranburi, maybe i should invite them for coffee at one of the mess's. I'm sure they'd be a lot of interest in their activities. Hope all is well in NA !

Ain't dead yet. Learning to dive.

Watch out for the sharkies :)

Haven't you heard? In the Red Sea they only eat Germans and Russians. Dunno why.

You did the right thing. Ive been here for 8 years and i dont trust anyone. Period!

Thanks Tomyam... It was dodgy, I hope people who read this and similar blogs realise that they don't have to feel obliged to give up overblown amounts of cash!!!

I strongly object to this character calling himself 'The Gippo Prat'. I may take out an injection.

Never open your door when there are Thais standing outside that you don't know.
