Currently spending some time in Ubon Ratchathani province in the North East of Thailand... a nice place. I was round a friend's house whilst he was in the process of cutting down a dead palm tree on his drive.... He was interested in what had finished this particular palm off, as all the others looked healthy.
His gardener performed the autopsy, cutting away at the flaky bark.... Underneath lay spongy, soft flesh, a sign that the tree was indeed very unhealthy.
Low and behold, first an army of beetle like creatures made for the exit, scampering away up the drive, but deep within the tree flesh were the 'grubs'.
My friends gardener immediately took to extracting them carefully, into a metal dish. They make for good eating, apparently.
I politely declined... But my friend had a fried one later on.. He said he found them fairly 'tasteless'.
He clearly has a far stronger stomoch than me.

Thai witchetty grubs ;)...you know they'll probably taste like chicken!

I think I'd rather eat the bamboo tree - in fact I know I would :-)

Ben that's the kind of Thai grub I can do without, more reason for me to stick with my steak and chips. Though I must admit they do look a bit meaty.

Yeah you're a NE Thai man Martyn, surprised you don't eat dried deep fried grubs for your brekkie

These look delicious. If they taste half as good as they look, I wont need to get my stomach pumped after a hearty meal of grubs. I am trying to find opinions on hotels and resorts through http://www.thebesthotelsinthailand.com Anyone have any ideas?
